![]() The big selling point of 'Dear Esther: Landmark Edition' is getting to hear the thoughts of artist Robert Briscoe, writer Dan Pinchbeck, and composer Jessica Curry. ![]() That's awesome, and I really hope more games experiment with this type of storytelling in the future. Every person who watches a film will see the same scenes, but video games allow for shockingly different paths to occur. It's a really unique situation, and it shows just how unique storytelling in games can be. Sometimes being left with more questions than answers can be frustrating and unsatisfying, but that wasn't how I felt after playing 'Dear Esther.' Instead, I wanted to discuss my playthrough with other players, and I've spent the past couple days talking to others who have played the game and seeing how our experiences differed. This continued up until the ending, and I'm still filled with many questions regarding what exactly happened. This adds an extra sense of mystery to the island, as I often debated whether or not I was seeing an accurate portrayal of the events that were unfolding. Washed up debris is all over the place, and there are often elements that shouldn't naturally be there. This is only fitting, as a lot of the storytelling is done by physically looking at the island itself. While the script changing is most noticeable, the game also randomizes different visual elements as well. I can't get into more different examples without ruining some of the story, but enough can get left out to totally change how one may interpret the events of 'Dear Esther.' For example, in my playthrough the narrator described a hermit who arrived on the secluded island after sailing there on a "boat without a bottom," yet it's possible for another player to never hear about this piece of lore. ![]() This means that each scripted voice-over sequence can unfold in several different ways, and that means that the story I was told will likely differ from the one that other players will experience. The game's story is semi-randomized for each playthrough. What is more interesting than the narrative, is how it's delivered. The only thing that is really clear from the very beginning is that the island where 'Dear Esther' takes place holds some dark secrets. His quips sometimes contradict each other, and his abnormal delivery only furthers the intrigue. This comes in the form of voice-over (large or small captions are also available) from what seems to be an unreliable narrator. The story is kept intentionally vague at first, and allows the player to put clues together. This helped the simple act of walking stay interesting for the entire game, even if it was only for 90 minutes or so. It really felt as if I was uncovering two mysteries at once, as I stumbled upon caverns and heard the nameless narrator remark upon events that occurred in the past and present. Thankfully, 'Dear Esther' takes place on a gorgeous, mysterious island that I wanted to explore every inch of. Just like in real life, walking around a virtual landscape can get boring. I always knew that I had to keep walking in order to advance the story, and that sort of simplicity actually felt refreshing in an era where I often have to deal with different gameplay systems intertwining. Instead, 'Dear Esther' feels like a much more curated, yet distinctly individual, experience since there is really only one thing to do at any point. It lacks the rooms full of objects, and light puzzle-solving elements that have become standard in this type of game, but I don't feel like it suffers from it. One thing that stands out is that The Chinese Room's game really just has one mechanic: walking. So, it's interesting to look back at 'Dear Esther,' since it's essentially the catalyst point of an entire subset of indie games. ![]() ![]() The gaming landscape has changed a lot in the past four years, and games like 'Gone Home' and 'Firewatch' have shown that first-person narratives have a place in gaming. It was a simple experience, but also a very divisive one. Sure, that seems really silly now, but it shows how foreign the concept of a game where the player just explored an island by walking around was just a few short years ago. When 'Dear Esther' was commercially released in 2012, it was the center of a lot of "is this really a game?" debates. ![]()

![]() ![]() The visuospatial sketchpad holds and manipulates information of the visual and spatial variety (as you probably could’ve guessed). For a new college student, this means that repetitive remembering (in the phonological loop) creates stronger memories and stronger bonds between related information. According to a recent psychological study, adults with normally functioning memory systems have more durability for verbal/auditory information than they do for visual information (4). If you cut open your brain, this is exactly what it looks like actually.įirst is the phonological loop, where verbal and auditory information is held and processed. Within working memory, there are three subdivisions of the processes memories and information here can go through: the phonological loop, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, and the central executive (1). What practicing different tasks as a student (be it arithmetic, unit tests, etc.) does is it makes it easier to connect different concepts in your memory, binding them together, simplifying remembering bigger chunks of information (2). To make it even simpler, this means that practice could actually mean perfect. Yes, it sounds really fancy, but it just means when a skill or procedure is mastered so well that it no longer requires conscious, effortful cognitive processing (4). To help explain this, there’s this psychological term called automaticity. ![]() We’re all in the same boat when it comes to exams we “forgot” to study for.īut, and all of your previous teachers may have been onto something here, the basic idea behind making working memory work more in your favor is: PRACTICE. The results of recent psychological studies indicate that in high pressure situations (like a college-level test or final exam), performance was almost identical between high capacity working memory participants and low capacity working memory participants (4). Yes Doc Brown, your capacity for memory really is that exciting.Īnd, here’s the kicker, there seems to be no way to truly improve or expand your working memory space, if you have been cursed with a lower working memory capacity.īut don’t go jumping for joy just yet if you believe you’ve been blessed with a high capacity in working memory. This essentially means that some processes and reasoning tasks use up more available space in working memory, leaving less space for other tasks. But, generally, students can be sorted into the categories of high capacity working memory and low capacity working memory (3). There’s no way to officially determine the amount of cap space available for working memory (it’s not like you can calculate that a particular person has 1.21 gigawatts worth of memory space). It’s the general assumption that there’s no limit to the amount of memories we can contain, right? Well, working memory actually does have a capacity (2). Now, there’s a trick with working memory. A simple example of the function of working memory is when you solve a double-digit addition problem in your head you have to hold onto the remainder of the single digits added together while you solve the rest of the equation. Working memory is very similar to the familiar idea of short-term memory, but working memory is the portion of the memory processes where either new information, or information pulled from long-term memory, is manipulated and processed (1). Well, here’s the thing, that feeling that your brain is full, you have this concept called working memory to thank for that. It feels like your brain is full you can’t possibly fit any more information in there. So you get to college and it feels like your brain is going to explode with all of the tasks you have to complete in addition to actually attending and paying attention in class. All those study methods and habits you thought worked so well don’t exactly compute with the oodles of homework, tests, and term projects piled on your plate. No matter where you go or what major you have, college is worlds away from any sort of high school education. You think that because high school was such a breeze that you must have stellar study habits and practices, right? You must have it all figured out already, right? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Examples include all European Militia, Colonial Militia, and Conscripts. Most ranged units classified as Militia are capable of using bayonets.I have outlined these unit types below, along with any noted exceptions. I have found that most standard ranged infantry units are capable of using bayonets. In addition, all units equipped with melee weapons such as swords, lances, tomahawks, or bows will obviously not be able to use bayonets. This includes Dragoons when dismounted and all Hand Mortar Companies. Units of any nation which are classified as Artillery, Missile Cavalry, Light Infantry, Skirmisher, Irregular, Armed Citizenry, or Mobs are not capable of using bayonets. I have exhaustively tested the army roster for all playable nations in Empire and have found that not all ranged army units are capable of using bayonets. ![]() Which units can be equipped with bayonets? Whether the unit card is viewed while in the deployment phase before a battle begins, or whether it is viewed after a battle has begun does not matter. This is important to remember when reading throughout the rest of this guide and when attempting to reproduce my findings in your current campaigns. I have found that only on the battle map will the effects of the bayonet technologies be listed on a units’ card. Oddly enough, the effects of the various bayonet technologies on unit statistics are not listed on the unit card of an army regiment when the card is viewed on the campaign map. Direct, quantifiable effects of Army technologies such as the bayonet techs can only be found through observation of the altered melee attack, reloading skill, and charge bonus values listed on the unit card of each unit for which the tech upgrades apply. I have found that these tooltips are useful for gauging general effects of those Army technologies which have somewhat vague tech tree descriptions. If one mouses over any of the various abilities listed, a series of tooltips will appear which provide additional information about the effect of each ability. These applicable army technologies will be listed next to any other default unit abilities such as “good stamina”, “resistant to morale shocks”, “can hide in woodland”, etc. The Abilities tab on the unit card is where all researched Army techs applicable to a specific unit are listed. Take note of the statistics for this regiment pictured below, as I will be referencing these default values for a regiment of Spanish Line Infantry later in the guide as we examine the upgrades that the various bayonet technologies grant. An example of one of these tooltips is illustrated in the below photo of a Spanish Line Infantry regiment unit card. A similar tooltip appears when the charge bonus value is moused over, stating that researching the New Model Bayonet Drill technology will increase the charge bonus value. If one mouses over the listed melee attack value of a bayonet-capable unit, a series of tooltips will appear stating that researching the bayonet technologies will increase this value. The Statistics tab on the unit card lists a units type, name, statistics, and abilities, among other things. My findings are listed in more detail below. These upgrades to unit stats can be viewed directly on the unit card under certain conditions. Specifically, I have found that the bayonet technologies directly affect the melee attack, reloading skill, and charge bonus values for bayonet-capable units. ![]() After conducting extensive research, I have found that the bayonet technologies do indeed offer definitive, quantifiable upgrades to unit statistics and battlefield effectiveness. ![]() Because most of the bayonet technology descriptions found in the technology tree do not list any direct, quantifiable upgrades to unit melee statistics, for quite some time I assumed that the different levels of bayonets merely increased battle effectiveness through granting units access to some form of additional animations or combat moves on the battlefield which rendered them more effective. I have long wondered if there was any identifiable link between army unit performance in melee and the different bayonet technologies available in Empire: Total War. In this article I will share my findings on what has been, to me at least, a mystery for quite some time. ![]() Joint probability only factors in the likelihood of both events occurring. For example, from a deck of cards, the probability that you get a six, given that you drew a red card is P(6│red) = 2/26 = 1/13, since there are two sixes out of 26 red cards. This is to say that the chance of one event happening is conditional on another event happening. The conditional probability formula is as follows: Joint probability should not be confused with conditional probability, which is the probability that one event will happen given that another action or event happens. A Venn diagram is perhaps the best visual tool to explain an intersection: Therefore, the joint probability is also called the intersection of two or more events. The probability of event X and event Y happening is the same thing as the point where X and Y intersect. The symbol “∩” in a joint probability is referred to as an intersection. Because the events red and 6 are independent, you can also use the following formula to calculate the joint probability: So the joint probability of picking a card that is both red and 6 from a deck is P(6 ∩ red) = 2/52 = 1/26 since a deck of cards has two red sixes-the six of hearts and the six of diamonds. It can only be applied to situations where more than one observation can occur at the same time. Joint probability measures two events that happen at the same time. As such, there is a 50-50 probability of drawing a red card versus a black card. This means there is an equal chance of drawing a red and black card since there are 26 of each in a deck. It is quantified as a number between 0 and 1, where 0 indicates an impossible chance of occurrence and 1 denotes the certain outcome of an event.įor example, the probability of drawing a red card from a deck of cards is 1/2 = 0.5. Probability is a field closely related to statistics that deals with the likelihood of an event or phenomenon occurring. Students continue their work with measures of variability, including MAD, in seventh grade Unit 7.Although joint probability can help you determine the likelihood of two different events happening at the same time, it does not indicate how the two events may influence each other. As a result, this unit now includes a new lesson (Lesson 10) where students understand MAD as a measure of variability of a data set. The revision involved shifting when the concept of mean absolute deviation (MAD) was introduced from seventh grade to sixth grade. Note: In December 2022, this unit was revised slightly to align more closely to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). They will also deepen their understanding of sampling and how to use random sampling to draw inferences about populations. In seventh grade, students will continue their study of statistics and investigate multiple data distributions simultaneously. Students investigate all of this within context in order to better understand how statistics can be used to investigate questions and understand more about our world. ![]() They’ll look at measures of center to investigate what a “typical” or average response to a question might be they’ll look at measures of variation to understand how similar or different the data in the set may be or how reliable a measure of center might be. ![]() Students will investigate two key concepts that will be important for future studies: measures of center and measures of variability. Students learn various ways to represent the data, including frequency tables, histograms, dot plots, box plots, and circle graphs, and they analyze each representation to determine what information and conclusions they can glean from each one (MP.4). Then they ask how they can interpret the data that comes from these questions (MP.2). Students come into sixth grade with some prior knowledge around data representations, such as bar graphs and line plots however, this is the first time that students ask the question “what is statistics” and “what can it help me solve?” Students begin the unit by first determining what a statistical question is. ![]() In Unit 8, sixth graders get their first experience of statistics. ![]() ![]() ![]() You may submit an Eweek item via WebTools using the “Bulletins” tab.
